KAWS aka Brian Donnelly just opened his big European museum exhibition, curated by Fernando Francés, at CAC Malaga. Titled Final Days, this is his first museum solo outside USA, and similar to his recent US shows and events at the end of last year (New York, KC, PAFA), this showing will coordinate with his solo that opened in Madrid back in Feb (covered). The new body of work will continue the Brooklyn-based artist’s series of large scale sculptures by presenting five versions of his familiar figures carved in wood which will stay on view until the 22nd of June.
Being one of the first western artists to start producing art & vinyl toys back in 1999, it is inspiring to see how far he has been able to take this concept. The character that he introduced on phone booths on the streets of NYC in the 90s, and later transformed into a vinyl figure in collaboration with Bounty Hunter from Japan, is nowadays being exhibited in museums around the US and now Europe. Created as a riff on t…

A rare VHS of the Metalheadz Sunday Sessions in the 90s. Featuring a whole heap of familiar faces and a DJ Set from Grooverider. There is a little sound degradation due to the age of the video, we hope this does not spoil your viewing pleasure. A rare glimpse at what is a seminal club night in jungle and drum and bass history.

André aka Monsieur André aka Monsieur A, born Andre Saraiva is a French graffiti artist. He paints a distinctive stick-figure character, usually with a top hat and an 'X' in place of one of the eyes. He started doing graffiti in 1985.
Born in Sweden, Andre became famous in the late 90's with Mr A, a cartoonish character with a round head, a cross and a circle for his eyes, a big smile and very long legs, which he used to draw all over the streets of Paris. He is part of the early parisian graffiti scene along with Invader and Zeus, and he appears in Banksy street art movie, Exit Through the Gift Shop. His distinctive style, poetic and joyful, and his use of pink color, made him quickly stand out. In the early 2000s, he developed the Love Graffiti series.
Andre was formerly married to French/American electro artist, Uffie.
While he is said to be very reclusive, he appears in the documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop. His appearance was shot by Thierry Guetta, a self-pr…
After Japan surrendered in 1945, ending World War II, Allied forces led by the United States occupied the nation, bringing drastic changes. Japan was disarmed, its empire dissolved, its form of government changed to a democracy, and its economy and education system reorganized and rebuilt. Years of reconstruction were required to recover from thousands of air raids, including the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. By the 1950s, a former enemy became a Western ally, parts of American culture became part of the Japanese landscape -- and Japan began to find its economic footing as a manufacturer consumer devices and electronics.
Gyaru (ギャル?) is a Japanese transliteration of the English word gal. The name originated from a 1970s brand of jeans called "gurls", with the advertising slogan: "I can't live without men", and was applied to fashion- and peer-conscious girls in their teens and early twenties. Its usage peaked in the 2000s and has gradually declined. The term gradually drifted to apply to an older group, whose seeming lack of interest in work or marriage gained the word a "childish" image. It is now used almost interchangeably with kogyaru.
Gyaru subculture is still a large influence in Japan's fashion economy with gyaru brands branching out and becoming more accessible in rural areas. In Tokyo, more often than not, a shopping center at each main train station is dedicated to offering the newest and trendiest items from popular Gal brands. Some brands are also reaching overseas by having their items easily accessible in webshops offering world-wide shipping ser…
