Time-lapse video turns Tokyo into a floating, endless metropolis

Image
Two features of Tokyo make an immediate impression on visitors. First is the sheer size of the teeming metropolis, as it seems to envelop you from all sides. Second is the otherworldly atmosphere imparted by its futuristic architecture, intricate network of crisscrossing train lines, and the fields of neon that come to life like blooming flowers after sundown.

These two characteristics have been captured, interpreted, and enhanced in an entrancing new video from Yokohama-based visual artist Darwinfish105 which gives the impression of floating through a Tokyo without borders or end.

Darwinfish105 has caught our attention with his time-lapse videos before, such as when he trained his lens on the giant Patlabor anime robot that made an appearance in Chiba. This time, he’s in Tokyo, and instead of shooting from the ground with a handheld camera, he attached one t

「TOKYODANDY 6TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY」開催!

バーコードをイメージロゴに2008年にスタートしたトウキョウダンディ。初心に戻るべく … 「Back To Basics」をシンプルに起用。

TOKYO DANDY brings the party back to TRUMP ROOM SHIBUYA for our 6TH Anniversary celebrations Saturday June 21st. The flyer utilizes the BARCODE logo we started out with back in 2008 and represents a ‘back to basics’ approach to having fun with naive abandon.

We’ve managed to get together a fine group of friends to DJ on this night, some who have been with us since the beginning, others we have picked up along the way.

A lot of people who I meet say they would like to go to a Tokyo Dandy Party but they thought it was invite only / exclusive. THIS is your invitation. In a city of snobs and wannabes we are your salvation, come hav…

20syl “Kodama” Music Video

Image
After gracing our pages with his brand of digitized, synth-heavy jam beats last month, French producer 20syl introduces a neat new video for his “Kodama” single. The song somehow fuses layers of atmospheric warps, soulful piano chords and vocal snippets into a cohesive sonic landscape, which to the naked ear may seem impossible to split apart. The above music video gives a behind-the-scenes look at the song being built ‘live,’ showcasing the creation of each element (including the cover art). Co-directed by Mathieu Le Dude and 20syl himself, enjoy the video for “Kodama” above.

Tokyo Prose in the mix for Mixmag - Drum n Bass Mix

Image
Tokyo Prose is the London-based, New Zealand-born drum 'n' bass producer who sits on the soulful side of the genre.

Alongside current luminary Lenzman, he makes slick, liquid d'n'b that'll make your feet move and transport your mind to another place. This is in full effect on his forthcoming album 'Presence', out via esteemed imprint Samurai Music and also featuring the likes of Lenzman, Synkro, LSB, DRS, Riya and Fox.

A dope LP for anyone into deep electronic music, 'Presence' is a journey through rolling d'n'b charged with emotion. You can get a taste of it live at the official album launch this Friday in Brixton, where Riya will perform album track 'Waiting On', for what will be a special Samurai takeover.

Samurai Music hits Plan B in Brixton this Friday, June 20, alongside Calibre, Synkro, Presha and more.

Yoichi Yamamoto x Issey Miyake “CH-AIR-S” Installation

Image
Following from Japanese architect Yoichi Yamamoto‘s 2011 “2D/3D Chairs” installation for Tokyo retail store Issey Miyake, the two team up again on “CH-AIR-S.” Located in Ginza, Japan, the installation is based off of Yamamoto’s fashion design philosophy, “From 2D Cloth to 3D Dress.” Those passing the store will see a series of tubes — held up by stainless steel wires — randomly float in mid-air. It isn’t until viewers reach the front of the shop window that the pieces come together to form five simple chair designs. An ingenious installation that toys with one’s perception, be sure to check out “CH-AIR-S” for yourself if you’re in Ginza. In the meantime check out the concept video below.

Tadanori Yokoo 横尾忠則

Image
Tadanori Yokoo is a Japanese graphic designer, illustrator, printmaker and painter.

Tadanori Yokoo, born in Nishiwaki, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, in 1936, is one of Japan's most successful and internationally recognized graphic designers and artists. He began his career as a stage designer for avant garde theatre in Tokyo. His early work shows the influence of the New York based Push Pin Studio (Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast in particular) but Yokoo himself cites filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and writer Yukio Mishima as two of his most formative influences.

In the late 1960s he became interested in mysticism and psychedelia, deepened by travels in India. Because his work was so attuned to 1960s pop culture, he has often been (unfairly) described as the "Japanese Andy Warhol" or likened to psychedelic poster artist Peter Max, but Yokoo's complex and multi-layered imagery is intensely autobiographical and entirely original. By the late 60s he had already achieved intern…
