BoF Examines the Successes of Rei Kawakubo's Protégés

It’s commonplace for young designers to cut their teeth at larger fashion houses before venturing out on their own, and no company has produced more future superstars than Rei Kawakubo’s COMME des GARÇONS. Perhaps the most famous of these is Junya Watanabe, who started at CdG as a patternmaker before being given his own label by Kawabuko back in the early ’90s. Kawakubo has given lines to several other designers including Tao Kurihara, Fumito Ganryu and Kei Nomiya, as well as mentoring others who went on to start their own lines including Chitose Abe of Sacai and Junichi Abe of Kolor. The abundance of talent can be accredited to the creative freedom afforded to designers by Kawakubo, explains Adrian Joffe, president of COMME des GARÇONS International: “Kawakubo gives them total freedom to do what they want,” he explains. “She sees and checks their collections the day before launching them, but it is very rare that she makes any changes. She will discuss strategy, budgets and policy w…

COMPLEX by Kouichi Kimura Architects

This structure designed by Kouichi Kimura Architects proves that a gorgeous design can indeed triumph over what might not be the most desirable of locations. COMPLEX is located on an arterial road with heavy traffic, in a densely developed area full of commercial facilities and condos. Designed as an office for a corporation, the building is composed of the garage on the first floor, the office on the second floor, and the guest house on the top two floors. The design makes clever use of shade and shadow in both the external and internal spaces of the building, with the interior decorating combining contemporary and traditional Japanese design elements including tatami mats, trees, marb

Invader is the pseudonym of a well-known French urban artist, born in 1969, whose work is modelled on the crude pixellation of 1970s-1980s 8-bit video games. He took his name from the 1978 arcade game Space Invaders, and much of his work is composed of square ceramic tiles inspired by video game characters. Although he prefers to remain incognito, and guards his identity carefully, his distinctive creations can be seen in many highly-visible locations in more than 60 cities in 30 countries. He documents each intervention in a city as an "Invasion", and has published books and maps of the location of each of his street mosaics.

In addition to working with tiles, Invader is one of the leading proponents of indoor mosaics created using stacks of Rubik's Cubes in a style he refers to as "Rubikcubism". He is also known for his QR code mosaic works.

Hiroshi Fujiwara to Open the POOL Pop-Up Shop in Shinjuku

Just over a year after unveiling his POOL concept retail door in Aoyama, Hiroshi Fujiwara is preparing to extend the franchise with a new pop-up location in Shinjuku. Over the course of its existence, the POOL aoyama did well to set a precedent of innovation and excellence, creating truly rare installation experiences such as a White Mountaineering collaborative pop-up and vintage streetwear trunk show. Perhaps in the temporary spirit of the store though, Fujiwara recently announced that the store will shutter its doors in April 2016. The announcement of the POOL shinjuku, then, represents the second phase of the idea, although for a much shorter period. Running from June 17 through June 22, the Shinjuku location will be located at Isetan Shinjuku. Be sure to check back here for a look inside the store as we near the launch date.

Chronicle Books, noticing that Boo had 5 million Facebook fans at the time, approached the owner to write a picture book. In August 2011, Boo: The Life of the World's Cutest Dog, written by his owner under pen name J.H. Lee, was published. The book was eventually published in ten languages. A second book followed, Boo: Little Dog in the Big City, as well as a calendar and plans for a cut-out book and additional children's books. He also has his own stuffed animal for kids. Spend a Night with Godzilla in Shinjuku

Last month, the Hotel Gracery in Shinjuku debuted a handful of new Godzilla-themed rooms, giving visitors to Tokyo the chance to experience a night like no other. In movies, Godzilla has a tendency to destroy cities or, more accurately, everything in his path. Shinjuku, itself devastated by the monster in three films, has nevertheless decided to make the character ambassador of tourism.

Toho studios, the license owner of Godzilla, has inaugurated a giant statue of the head of the creature, peaking at 52 meters above the ground. The hope is that it will contribute to the prosperity of Shinjuku and Kabukicho, the “red light district” where it was installed.

With a giant dino head on top of Toho Cinema and the Gracery Hotel, it can easily be seen from the Yamanote line. The beast was erected as part of a renovation of the shopping complex that includes both the cinema and the hotel. Six rooms are billed as “Godzilla view rooms,” where you can sleep under the watchful eye and gian…

Tracing the 80-Year History of Porter-Yoshida

In a recent interview for Port Magazine between David Hellqvist and Porter-Yoshida’s managing director Ken Matsubara, the pair trace the Japanese bag brand’s history and sartorial impact on today’s fashion market. In the opening paragraphs we are reminded of the bag’s inconspicuous presence and need within modern day menswear, before Hellqvist reveres Porter-Yoshida as one of the pioneering brands to fill this void. Established in 1935 by Kichizo Yoshida in Tokyo’s Kanda-Sudachō district, the brand initially struggled as a result of its placement and timing before experiencing the recognition it holds today with a collection that spans backpacks, satchels, wallets and briefcases all in their signature nylon blend fabric. Despite its success and the allure of transforming into a multi-disciplinary fashion house such as that of Gucci or Prada, Porter-Yoshida has fought to retain its identity and has expanded within its respective field to offer 1,500 bag styles over 130 different sub…

Essentials: Space Invader

For our latest installment of Essentials, we take a look at some of the must-have work tools that street artist Invader has at his disposal day in and day out. A graduate of one of France’s top art schools École des Beaux-Art, his early works drew inspiration from popular 8-bit video games from the late 1970s to 1980s, most notably the characters from Space Invaders which is also where his pseudonym derives from. The inherent pixellated nature of these games is present throughout Invader’s mosaics, where the combination of contrasting tiles best depicts the throwback motifs in an eye-catching and distinct manner. After carefully arranging the tiles with tape, the French artist utilizes a metal scraper, nail remover and brush to prep his tagging surface, before attaching it as a whole, or piece by piece, with super glue or cement. A steel block hammer is used to ensure that all the tiles are put into place properly. Other essentials Invader presents include a Bruce Lee mask to hide h…

The Ramen Poster: Wall Art for Ramen Lovers

In many ways, ramen is the food equivalent of chess. Both are built upon ingeniously simple frameworks (a simple set of ingredients, a simple set of rules) that set the stage for highly complex, infinitely experimental and universally beloved results. There are virtually no limits to the ways one can create and enjoy a bowl of ramen, making it easy to see why ramen, in all its renditions, is so beloved. Fanny, a designer from Berkeley, California, is taking the universal appeal of ramen and turning it into art. She’s created a wall poster that displays custom illustrations of 25 of the most recognizable styles of ramen from different parts of Japan. The poster includes top-down views of everything from Hokkaido’s famous miso-based Sapporo ramen to Yamagata cold ramen, along with the ingredients for each version listed below it. A dedicated ramen enthusiast herself, Fanny’s passion project is proof that ramen, like chess, is far more than just the sum of its parts. A bowl of ramen i…
