Os Gemeos x JR x Andre Saraiva (New York)

Image
In town for their Parallel Connection project (covered), Brazilian twins Os Gemeos used this opportunity to create a couple of sneaky street works with their friends. They teamed up with French part-time locals, JR and Andre Saraiva, and painted some lovely pieces on the streets of SoHo in New York.

Mixing their different styles and signature elements, artists were able to created a lovely collaboration. Using JR’s paste up eye photographs as a base, Saraiva painted his famous Mr Andre stickman-like characters which were than upgraded by the twins. Adding a bit of yellow color to them, as well as their recognizable line work and shadow effect, Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo nicely rounded up this interesting collaborative piece. To leave their full mark, the two added one of their vandal characters tagging Gemeos in between this eclectic mix.

A few days before painting this piece, Os Gemeos and JR created another piece on another location in the city. Cleverly using a front facade of…

Hayao Miyazaki Un-retires

Image
Fans around the world were delighted to hear last month that Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki will be working on a ten minute short that will screen exclusively at the Studio Ghibli museum in Japan. His son Goro Miyazaki revealed that his father is bored maintaining the museum and wants to keep busy working on a new three year project that will feature a 3D animation about a caterpillar named Boro. Hopefully this means the man known for producing the highest quality traditional hand-drawn animation will consider permanently un-retiring.

JAMALSKI DUBPLATE - JUMP JUMP TOKYO

Image
JAMALSKI BIOGRAPHY

Jamalski, agitator since 1991. This is not a marketing slogan. Who else but this MC born in New York City can boast about driving BPM counters crazy, making clubbers and party people going hysterical and breaking the barriers between Hip Hop, Ragga, Jungle, Funk, House, Dub, Techno and Drum’N’Bass? From his debut featuring KRS One in 1990 to this inflammatory Ruffnecks Revenge release, Jamalski has always put himself above cliché, easiness and well-established genres.

When he talks about his vision of Drum’N’Bass through this album, Jamalskidoes not speak about what we think we already know: “For me, Drum is futuristic Punk-Rock, a very underground sound which takes its roots in Hip Hop, Dub, Rave scene or Techno from Detroit but also in Bad Brains music and from all the artists who broke musical barriers…I’m part of the people who don’t make music to please radio programmers.”

very time he holds the mic on stage, Jamalski brings an enormous charge of adrenaline t…

MONSIEUR CHAT in Paris

Image
MONSIEUR CHAT

M. Chat (also known as Monsieur Chat and Mr Chat) is the name of a graffiti cat that originally appeared in Orléans, France in 1997. The graffiti appeared most frequently on chimneys, but was also sighted in other places, such as train platforms and at political rallies. The artist was originally anonymous, but in 2007 Thoma Vuille was caught in the act of creating the cat.

The yellow cartoon cat is characterized by its large Cheshire Cat grin. The cat is most often portrayed in a running pose, but has also been variously depicted waving signal flags, bouncing on a ball, sporting angel wings, and waving in greeting at the entrance to a train station. It is sometimes accompanied by the tag "M. Chat" in small letters.

A 2004 documentary, Chats perchés (The Case of the Grinning Cat), by film maker Chris Marker, used the phenomenon of M. Chat's appearance across France as a springboard for a reflection on the state of the country post-9/11.

Take a Look at the Rural Geometric Cabin of Renowned Japanese Photographer Mikio Hasui

Image
Although the archetype of a house dictates that it has at least four corners that meet at right angles, the rural home of Japanese commercial photographer Mikio Hasui confounds this time-tested template for a mind-opening geometric dome of a house, providing a uniquely alluring volume composed of tessellated triangles. Built by Hasui in 2000 in the town of Gohongi in Nagano Prefecture, the house heavily utilizes timber throughout — aiming to evoke the atmosphere of a traditional kissaten coffee bar – while numerous skylights maintain an airy and light-filled interior. An open-plan living room is optimized towards Hasui’s oversized ’60s-era Altec Lansing speakers, from which the jazzophile pumps out mellow jazz tunes. Also serving as Hasui’s workplace, the house encompasses his atelier, office, and darkroom. Read Freunde von Freunden‘s accompanying interview with the acclaimed photographer and purveyor of good taste here.

Marvel Comics Creates Its Own Versions of Iconic Hip-Hop Album Covers

Image
The superheroes of Marvel Comics have shown up everywhere in the past few years, given the urgency with which Hollywood has marketed the bunch, but who would expect them to take over our favorite classic and contemporary hip-hop covers too? With more than 50 covers planned, Marvel has replaced the album art of 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’ with Iron Man, Eric B. & Rakim’s Paid in Full with Spider-Man and Deadpool, and The Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready to Die with Ant-Man. “For years, Marvel Comics and hip-hop culture have been engaged in an ongoing dialogue,” said Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso in a press release. “Beginning this October, we will shine a spotlight on the seamless relationship between those two unique forces.” Check out the first few album covers in the gallery above and head over to HYPETRAK for the latest in music.

How to Forge the Hattori Hanzo Katana From 'Kill Bill'

Image
Given the gravitas that the katana wielded by Uma Thurman’s Black Mamba character in the cult Kill Bill franchise was afforded, it is no surprise that the weapon — forged in the films by the legendary Japanese blacksmith Hattori Hanzo — still captures the imagination of blade enthusiasts worldwide. In the Man at Arms: Reforged YouTube series, Baltimore Knife and Sword enlisted the help of master armorer and engraver Ilya Alekseyev, accompanied by a five-man swordsmithing crew, to recreate the awe-inspiring blade by which no small number of baddies met a gruesome end in Quentin Tarantino’s epic. Watch the video above and explore the rest of the series here.

HUF TOKYO Opening Its Doors Next Month

Image
Launched in 2002 by skateboarder Keith Hufnagel, HUF has quickly become a perennial skate and streetwear brand. Now, the label is extending its reach to East Asia with a flagship store in Tokyo, Japan. The interior design of this new space is reminiscent of the plywood layers found in skateboards, resulting in a natural design manifesting itself in the furniture as well. Vintage Los Angeles artwork and flags hark images of the brand’s origin, offering Japanese visitors a taste of all things Californian. To commemorate the opening, there will be limited edition T-shirts and memorabilia available. The location will open its doors August 1 in the Shibuya area, and a special gift is available to all patrons who purchase over 15,000 JPY (approximately $120 USD).
