Japan's Newest Express Train Is Designed to Blend Into the Landscape

Image
Japan’s bullet trains have become instantly recognizable for their proudly futuristic design language, which gives them the impression of having come barrelling out of several decades from now. However, architect Kazuyo Sejima of Sanaa has decided to do away with all that in a new design for the next generation of the Seibu Railway Co. flagship limited express trains by cladding them completely in a semi-reflective metallic skin so that they all but blend into the surrounding landscape.

“The limited express travels in a variety of different sceneries, from the mountains of Chichibu to the middle of Tokyo, and I thought it would be good if the train could gently co-exist with this variety of scenery,” said the Pritzker Prize winner. “I also would like it to be a limited express where large numbers of people can all relax in comfort, in their own way, like a living room, so that they think to themselves ‘I look forward to riding that train again.’” Set to hit the tracks of Tokyo in 2…

Fred Perry Opens Largest Flagship Store in Tokyo

Image
Fred Perry recently opened up the doors to its largest flagship store to-date in Tokyo’s vibrant Harajuku district, the Japanese home to many of the world’s biggest names. Inspired by aesthetics from the industrial revolution, the stunning 330 square meter space houses numerous floors each catering to varying themes of hospitality and British subcultural experiences. A cozy garrett-esk space decked out with cozy furniture and coffee table books is arranged for loyal customers on the top floor, while the mezzanine floor just below boasts an immersive set of TANNOY’s speakers and LINN’s analogue players. Moving further down you will find the collaboration-dedicated space featuring items from the likes of Raf Simons and Nigel Cabourn alongside a striking wooden counter carved in the shape of the brand’s iconic laurel wreath logo. The ground floor showcases the full lineups from Fred Perry’s men’s, women’s, and kid’s collections, in addition to various accessories and leather goods.

McDonald's New Anime Japan - マクドナルド「未来のワタシ」

Image
Sure, we all know what a McDonald’s in real life actually looks and feels like, and it’s sad to say that it’s nothing as whimsical and quaint as what’s depicted in the latest animated advertisement by McDonald’s Japan. That’s not to say it isn’t inspiring in some strange, heartfelt way. The campaign has several different versions, some made according to certain regions, all of which were produced by Studio Colorido and features several voice actors from Japan’s popular girl group, AKB48. For those of you in Japan, perhaps you can let us know in the comment section whether or not this new recruitment campaign, or “Crew ni Narō” — directly translating to “join the crew” — has created a buzz of ardent adolescents queuing to sign up to work at their nearest McDonald’s or not. All in all, it’s a fun watch and definitely something different from the common McDonald’s ads we’re used to. Unfortunately there’s no subtitles yet, but enjoy the visuals nonetheless.

Daido Moriyama's “Color 1970 – 1990” @ Taka Ishii Gallery

Image
Following the “Kiss” exhibition and its black and white photograms, Taka Ishii Gallery are now showing the artist’s less well-known profile: his color works. Thirty photographs were carefully selected in 1996 by Daido Moriyama and Taka Ishii Gallery from the photographer’s archives and assembled into two limited edition portfolios: “Color I” and “Color II.” This selection was exhibited in Tokyo that same year but has never since been displayed. Rarely viewed together, some of the photographs have nevertheless appeared in the photographer’s major publications such as the books “Color” (1993) and “Kagero & Colors” (2007), as well as the leading magazine “Camera Mainichi” or the Japanese edition of “Playboy.” These portfolios are Daido Moriyama’s first attempt to print his photographic images using Iris print. Developed in the 1980s, Iris print is a form of Ink-jet printing that sprays millions of ink particles directly onto printing paper. This giclée process yields very high qual…

In Japan - 2015 - Super video

Image
This film is a collection of audiovisual moments and memories of a 3-week railway journey through Japan in 2015. We were whizzing through the country with the Shinkansen visiting Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima and Kyoto as well as lots of wonderful little places along the way, meeting the most friendly people and experiencing a culture that somehow balances its rich tradition with a very futuristic present.
