Kidult's "Visual Rape" Solo Show in Tokyo - Photo Report

Image
Following a provocative teaser promoting his first solo show titled “Visual Rape,” graffiti artist Kidult opened the exhibition for a mere 48 hours over the weekend in Tokyo. On display was a miniature replica of the Paris Chanel store he famously tagged back in 2013, a wall of posters featuring Donald Trump sporting a Supreme tee a la Morrissey, as well as other pieces of artwork eschewing government corruption and consumerism. Also, a figure tearing a Goldman Sachs sign in pursuit of cash, to the Coca Cola slogan rewritten to state “Enjoy Ebola” were just a few of the boundary-pushing items tackling corporate greed.

“Dots Obsession – Alive, Seeking for Eternal Hope” is open through September 26.

Eastpak Pays Homage to Traditional Japanese Denim

Image
Eastpak is no stranger to luxurious makeovers thanks to collabs with the likes of Tim Coppens and Vetements, but the brand’s latest Padded Pak’rs are arguably the best of the bunch as the Boston-bred imprint has headed all the way to Japan for some denim insights. Teaming up with Okayama-based Kuroki, the brand’s new backpacks come decked out in beautiul selvedge denim for a throwback to the heritage styles of old. And, as if that weren’t enough, Eastpak has crafted its own vintage boro collection to go with Kuroki’s koi-lined bags, each of which offers up a patchwork motif of high-quality denim that dates its motifs all the way back to the 19th century.

Limited to just five handmade backpacks, the boro Padded Pak’rs are available in Japan now for about $1,120 USD each while the collaborative Kuroki-designed bags can be picked up from Japanese Eastpak dealers for about $145 USD.

Image
If you missed out on this summer’s collaboration between mastermind JAPAN and Vans, fear not — the Japanese favorite’s signature aesthetic is back on yet another footwear release, this time gracing a couple of classic Reebok silhouettes: the Pump Omni Lite and Instapump Fury Road. As you might expect, both pairs come decked out in black and white, in this case coupling monochromatic black uppers with contrasting white sole units. mastermind’s skull and crossbones joins the fray as well and decorates both the heel and the Pump apparatus of each shoe.

Expect both collaborative designs to hit select Japanese retailers this Wednesday, August 31, before making their way to additional Reebok stockists in the weeks ahead.

“HICKORY DICKORY DOCK” by MADSAKI - Photo Report

Image
Madsaki’s signature smiley faces have always had a bit of a sinister, subversive edge to them thanks to their dripping eyes and mouths and applications to portraits of world leaders like Vladimir Putin. Now the Japanese artist is bringing his works to Hidari Zingaro, teaming up with the gallery to open “HICKORY DICKORY DOCK.” The Japanese painter’s brand new solo exhibition, “HICKORY DICKORY DOCK” will showcase a ton of Madsaki originals — including the artist’s Homage to Takashi Murakami, which was created back in February. The nod to Murakami and its setting at Hidari Zingaro are all the more hilarious given that some of Murakami’s original floral artworks — the inspiration behind Homage — decorate the walls of Bar Zingaro on the second floor. The work isn’t supposed to be some dig, though — Murakami and Madsaki have teamed up a number of times in the past and Murakami is just one of the artists Madsaki imitated with “WANNABIE’S” last year.
